A Team by Team Breakdown of 2A District 5 Boys Basketball for the Upcoming 2023-2024 Season
Escalante's Greysen Horan shoots a three pointer against Questa. |
The 2023-2024 Class 2A District 5 Boys basketball season is due to get underway on Monday, November 27th, with the Escalante Lobos visiting the Estancia Bears. Here is a breakdown and preview of each of the six teams in the district, including video highlights from last season of returning players to look out for.
Escalante Lobos
2022-2023 Record:
20-8 Overall, 12-1 District
Notable Departures:
Tomas Atencio, Nathaniel Martinez
2022-2023 Escalante Lobos Highlights:
Torrez might be one of the best overall players in the state from a Class 2A team to return this season. He was voted 2022-2023 District Player of Year last season by the coaches in District 5. He is definitely the most-well rounded player in the district. After averaging a double-double last year during his Junior season with 17.5 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game, it is entirely possible he could average a triple-double for the 23-24 season. Torrez is a very athletic player, as well as a smart player with a good sense of the game. With the departure of their leader and point guard, Tomas Atencio, it will be interesting to see whether Torrez takes over the role at point guard and, if so, whether he could still be as effective of a scorer while being a facilitator.

#31 Greysen Horan - Forward - Senior
Horan is an outstanding outside shooter for a front-court player, as well as being an outstanding scorer in the paint. He is also a clutch player. Against Mesa Vista, in a very close game, with just over two minutes left, Horan hit a big three-pointer to bring the Lobos within two.

Looking Forward to 2023-2024:
The Lobos reached the quarterfinals of the state tournament as a six seed last season, losing to three seed Texico. They are also the only 2A District 5 team last season to have regular season win over state champion runner up, ATATC (Santa Fe). Under Isaac Royston, Escalante is an extremely well coached team, having won the last three District 5 titles. With possibly six seniors returning this season, they would appear to be the favorite to win the district again for a fourth season in a row and possibly make waves in the state playoffs.

2022-2023 Record:
16-13 Overall, 10-4 District
Notable Departures:
Jordan Cervantes, Angel Montoya, Brandon Sandoval, Daniel Martinez
2022-2023 Mesa Vista Trojans Highlights:
Notable Returning Players:
#20 Jordan Gallegos - Center - SophomoreGallegos is only a Sophomore but has a chance to be the most dominant players in the district this season. He averaged 8.2 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game in his Freshman year. Gallegos is an outstanding finisher inside, as well as a good ball handler for someone with his size. In the regular season win at Escalante last season, Gallegos took over the game in the fourth quarter at both ends of the court, blocking a shot out of bounds, and then making a steal on the same defensive possession. He then scored a huge basket on a drive to the left with under two minutes to go, at the other end of the floor before the Trojans ultimately left town with the W.
#30 Marcos Martinez - Guard - Senior
Senior Marcos Martinez is a very good defender that is able to finish consistently when he gets in the open court. He is also very fast, a good ball handler and has a good outside shot as well. His leadership will be depended upon this season with himself being one of four Seniors on the roster for Mesa Vista.

#10 Santiago Martinez - Guard - Sophomore
Although only a Freshman last year, Santiago Martinez was a stand out at the guard position. He is a very tough player, not afraid of contact when driving to the basket and has the athleticism to finish off-balanced shots. He has great passing and ball handling skills to go along with very good speed.

Looking Forward to 2023-2024:
Mesa Vista is an up-and-coming team that finished with a winning record for the first time last year since the 2016-2017 season. One of their biggest wins came on the road in Tierra Amarilla against Escalante, in a regular season game last January. Under veteran coach Thomas Vigil, they seem like the most likely team in District 5 to challenge Escalante for the title this season. They certainly have plenty of motivation to do so, after ending the 2022-2023 season with back to back loses to Escalante; once in the District 5 tournament, and again as an eleven seed in the state tournament.

When asked to describe the upcoming season, Coach Vigil said it was going to be a "dog fight." For a team in a district in which everyone is very familiar with each other, that mentality will serve them well. The Trojans return four Seniors this season with Marcos Martinez, Khalil Patterson, Antonio Manzanares and Calvin Jaramillo. With the experience of those Senior players, as well as the further development of Jordan Gallegos and Santiago Martinez, Mesa Vista will be a handful for anyone they face.
2022-2023 Record:
6-18 Overall, 4-10 DistrictNotable Departures:
Elias Archibeque, Jeremiah Martinez
2022-2023 Penasco Panthers Highlights:
#24 Demarcus Lopez - Power Forward/ Wing - Senior
Lopez is a fast wing player that is able to fill in at the point guard position as well. He is a very natural ball handler and is able to finish well when driving to the basket. He is also very accurate from the three-point line.
#00 Kaileb Atencio - Shooting Guard/ Wing - Sophomore
Another Penasco player that shouldn’t be left alone outside is Point Guard, Kaileb Atencio. He is an outstanding shooter, as well as ball handler and passer. For a slightly undersized player last season as a Freshman, he had no problem when driving to the hoop and finishing with contact. An outstanding example of this was a steal and one-man break that ended with a beautiful left-handed finish against Mora last year. Coach Tim Pacheco said Atencio is a "very unselfish player" that they have to try to get more involved. This will be a fun player to watch develop over the next few seasons.
#21 Dylan Lopez - Power Forward/ Wing - Senior
The third Penasco player to look out for is Senior Power Forward Dylan Lopez. Of the Penasco players mentioned, Lopez might have the smoothest three-point shot of all, slowly winding up and firing with an effortless motion. He is also a presence inside when he drives or rebounds.
Looking Forward to 2023-2024:
Despite their record last season, Penasco is a team that should not be easily dismissed coming into this year. This is going to be a fun team to watch. Although the Panthers will definitely miss the defensive presence of Archibeque, and the outstanding ball handling of Martinez after their graduations, their absences will give the above-mentioned returning players a chance to develop their games even further.

Although the Panthers will definitely miss the defensive presence of Archibeque, and the outstanding ball handling of Martinez after their graduations, their absences will give the above-mentioned returning players a chance to develop their games even further.
The Panthers will also return the Romero brothers, Junior Angel and Sophomore Shai, as well as Senior Center Matias Vigil. Coach Pacheco also mentioned Junior Lyrik Montoya, "a good perimeter defender that can run the floor", and Sophomore Center Nehemiah Chavez, "our best post player -- one of our best rebounders and finishers inside", as being big pieces of the puzzle this season. This looks like it could be a dangerous team if they’re able to put those pieces together when they need to.
Vallejos is an outstanding ball handler with great moves when in isolation situations. He has the ability to drive left and finish off-balanced shots almost routinely when he gets going, which was on display last season at home against Mora. He brings a lot of energy to the team. If he continues to develop as a passer, he could be a force at the guard position for the next several seasons.
#24 Antonio Romero - Forward - Senior
Romero is a player with a chance to make a huge leap from his Junior to Senior year. He is a very athletic player with speed, length and the toughness to finish in the paint. He is a problem for defenses when on a break, as he’s able to get down court fast, catch the ball high and finish off-balanced shots. He also plays well on the defensive, seeming to have a knack for picking off cross-court passes. The Wildcats will definitely need him to play well this season in order to improve as a team.
#12 Martin Rivera - Forward - Senior
Another Senior with a chance to make a big impact this season is Forward, Martin Rivera. He is another tough front-court player that does well in the paint. Rivera has a smooth mid-range jump shot that he’s fairly consistent with. He will be a big piece of the puzzle for Questa this season.
#25 Esteban Gomez - Forward - Senior
Gomez is another tough player for Questa that excels at shot blocking. He is a good rebounder, able to get second-chance points on the offensive boards. He is another part of the front-court for the Wildcats that could have an impact this season.
Notable Departures:
Juan Duran, Jesse Gold, Ethan Garcia
One of the players in District 5 that stood out the most on film from last season was Mora Point Guard, Lincoln Alcon. He is an outstanding scorer when driving to the basket, using a graceful Euro Step move that many players at any level would envy. Alcon also has outstanding court vision and the athleticism to get the ball to his teammates on time. Against Questa last season, he had a stretch where he took over the game single handedly. His leadership will be needed this season for the Rangers.
Notable Departures:
Jolen Montoya, Casey Nevarez, Alejandro Martinez

Juan Gonzalez, Marcus Gonzalez, Joaquin Hawkes

Looking Forward to 2023-2024:
Questa is another team in the district that has more talent than the previous season would lead you to believe. The Wildcats will have a new head coach this season, with Michael Rael taking over for Miguel Romero. The Wildcats could also return five Seniors this season. It would appear that with the aforementioned players’ likely development from last season, the Wildcats are ready to make a big improvement on last season’s record.
If I had only one word to use when describing this Questa team, I would use "tough." If the Wildcats are able to slow teams down to their pace of play, and grind it out with a very physical front court, they will likely be in games late that they'll have a chance to finish with their physicality. The film from last season shows a team that, despite their record, did not mail it in. If they’re able to maintain that effort and build on these pieces, the Wildcats could improve dramatically from last season to the upcoming one.

Mora Rangers
2022-2023 Record:
13-15 Overall, 7-8 DistrictNotable Departures:

#24 Jeremiah Pacheco - Forward - Senior
Pacheco is the inside presence for the Rangers. Pacheco is an outstanding offensive rebounder. Some players have a knack for being in the right spot at the right time, and Pacheco seems to be one. He’s also a solid scorer in the paint, putting back many of those offensive rebounds for points.
Looking Forward to 2023-2024:

Looking Forward to 2023-2024:
The Mora Rangers were the last team to win a District 5 title, back in the 2019-2020 season, before the Escalante Lobos began their run of three straight. With possibly five Seniors returning, the Rangers could very well compete for the district title this season. If there were ever a coach up for the job of getting this team back to a winning season, it would certainly be Manuel Romero, with a resume of over 400 career victories as the head coach at Mora, Penasco, Robertson and now back at Mora entering his third year, in his second stint.
McCurdy Bobcats
2022-2023 Record:
15-15 Overall, 10-6 DistrictNotable Departures:
Jolen Montoya, Casey Nevarez, Alejandro Martinez
2022-2023 McCurdy Bobcats Highlights:
Notable Returning Players:
#1 Ryan Montoya - Guard - Junior
Another one of the most athletic and well-rounded players in the District is Ryan Montoya of McCurdy. Montoya is an outstanding scorer that might be the fastest player in the district. He can shoot from outside. He can finish on the drive. He can facilitate the ball to his teammates. Although just a Junior, he would appear to be the leader of this team. The Bobcats will certainly need him to play well this season.
#11 Jeremaya Roybal - Forward - Junior
Another Junior expected to make an impact for McCurdy this season is Forward, Jeremaya Roybal. He is a very athletic player with good shot blocking ability on defense. He also has a very athletic move to the basket on offense. If his game has progressed even a little bit, he will be a big part of getting the Bobcats to the next level.
Looking Forward to 2023-2024:
Since joining Class 2A District 5 prior to the 2020-2021 season, the McCurdy Bobcats have yet to win a District 5 title. The Bobcats finished third in District 5 last season, which included an appearance as the sixteen seed in the state championship tournament against the eventual 2022-2023 Class 2A State Champions, the Pecos Panthers.
McCurdy would certainly appear ready to contend for the district title this year. They are a team that can shoot it out with the best of them, which they showcased in a 90-82 game they lost against Mesa Vista in last season's district tournament. When asked if the Bobcats could put up those type of numbers regularly throughout this season, Coach Ernesto Espinoza said, "we definitely play New Mexico style of basketball -- fast." Another player to watch out for is Junior Guard Judah Duran. He's a very quick ball handler and good finisher at the basket. If McCurdy is able to get solid production from their bench, they can likely play with anyone in the district.
Big District 5 games to look out for on the 2023-2024 schedule:
Friday, December 1st, 2023 - Mora Rangers at Pecos Panthers
Although last season wasn't an ideal one for the Mora Rangers, they have an early chance to see if they're ready to return to contending for the district title. The Rangers have their work cut out for them, opening the season with a shot at the state champs in Pecos. Although Pecos lost a total of nine seniors from last season's championship team, they will still be a formidable opponent for the Rangers to start the season with. If "iron sharpens iron" as they say, Mora will appreciate starting the season off against Pecos.
Friday, December 1st, 2023 - Questa Wildcats at Coronado Leopards
Questa's biggest game last season came at home against the Coronado Leopards (Gallina), in a blow out, 58-28, win. The two teams will open their seasons against each other in Gallina, as well as a second game in Questa on Thursday, December 17th. For a Questa team that looks prime for a big improvement this season, these two games will be a good non-district series to see where they stand compared to last season.
Saturday, January 13th, 2024 - Pecos Panthers at Escalante Lobos
The Lobos played twice last season against the eventual state champions, Pecos, first in a game Pecos won handedly, 70-40, in Pecos, and last in a close 55-48 loss, at a neutral site, in the Northern Rio Grande Tourney in Espanola. This will be a good chance for Escalante to size themselves up, and possibly exact some revenge, against a defending champion that had a big turnover from last season.
Tuesday, January 16th, 2024 - Escalante Lobos at ATATC Phoenix
One of the bigger wins from last season for the Lobos was a 46-40 win at home against the Academy for Technology And The Classics (Santa Fe). ATATC went on to lose in the Class 2A championship game against Pecos. This is another good chance for the Lobos to see where they stand against another very good 2A program that only lost two seniors from last season's team.
Saturday, January 27th, 2024 - Escalante Lobos at Mesa Vista Trojans
Mesa Vista made big strides last year as a program, with a big win in Tierra Amarilla against Escalante in the regular season, but they also lost their final two games against the Lobos to end last season. Aside from a possible meeting in a regular season tourney, this will be the first meeting on a home court between the two teams since the end of last season. This is a game I would imagine the folks in Ojo Caliente will have marked on their calendars. This is a match up absolutely worth turning out to see.
Saturday, January 27th, 2024 - Penasco Panthers at McCurdy Bobcats
For the Penasco Panthers, the biggest win of their 2022-2023 schedule came in a thirteen-point win at the Northern Rio Grande Tourney against the McCurdy Bobcats. Although McCurdy won the next two games against Penasco, this is a game the Panthers could come into with confidence, knowing they have a recent win against this McCurdy team.
Saturday, February 3rd, 2024 - Penasco Panthers at Mesa Vista Trojans
Another game to look forward to for the Penasco Panthers will be their first regular season meeting against Mesa Vista, if they do not meet in the NRG Tourney. After a one-point loss at home against the Trojans, 54-53, last season, this is another game the Panthers should have some confidence going into.
