Big Weekend at the Dual Cities Tourney for District 5 and Escalante rolls over Navajo Pine

  Week 5: New Mexico 2A District 5 Hoops Recap December 25th - December 30th Three District 5 teams visited Santa Rosa for the Dual Cities Tournament, and Escalante played on the road at Navajo Pine. Escalante's Damein Baeza hits a three in the first half of their game against Navajo Pine. Thursday, December 28th Santa Rosa, New Mexico Dual Cities Tournament Penasco Panthers - 77 Monte Del Sol Charter Dragons - 45 Penasco came into this game with a 2-4 record on the season, after a tough outing in Santa Rosa against the Lions within the last week on Friday.  Regardless of the outcome of the game last week, Senior Guard Demarcus Lopez must have felt at home in Santa Rosa’s gym.  Lopez went off, scoring 38 points for the Panthers against the Monte Del Sol Charter Dragons in the opening game of the weekend.  “He couldn’t miss from three…it was something to see,” Penasco Coach Tim Pacheco said of Lopez.  Lopez started the night with 14 points in the first half.  The third quarter was w

Week 4: 2A District 5 Hoops December 18th - December 23rd It was a slow week leading up to the Christmas break.  Only six games on the schedule to recap.  Here we go. Mora's Santiago Gold hits a baseline jumper during the second half against the Maxwell Bears. Tuesday, December 19th Espanola, New Mexico Santa Rosa Lions - 77 McCurdy Bobcats - 69 The Bobcats played the Lions for the second time within a week; first at the tourney in Tularosa, and at home in Espanola on Tuesday night.  The Bobcats came out ready in this one, leading after the first quarter and at halftime, 37-30.   McCurdy got another big game out of Lucas Martinez, who scored 21 points and added 4 assists and 4 steals.  This was the third game in a row in which Martinez had scored over twenty points.  Ryan Montoya also played well, scoring 20 points and grabbing 8 steals for the Bobcats.  Jeremaya Roybal added 15 points and 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals.   The Bobcats held onto a 60-55 lead, before being outsco
